Sewage Treatment Tank FAQs

Around a million properties in the UK aren’t connected to a mains sewer so they need another way of disposing of sewage. Septic tanks are one option. Buying a sewage treatment plant is another.

Waste enters the treatment tank where the solids (or sludge) settle and separate from the liquid. Wastewater passes into a second chamber (the aeration chamber) where air pipes feed naturally occurring bacteria with oxygen. The bacteria feed on the waste, gradually filtering the water. Once treated, the wastewater passes into a final chamber where any remaining sludge settles. After that, it’s safe to be discharged either into the ground or to a water course.

It’s all down to where the waste treatment takes place. With a septic tank, no waste is treated in the tank itself. It’s all down to the effectiveness of the drainage field into which the wastewater empties. Buying a septic tank can be highly effective where there’s good drainage but if your home or business sits on clay (or where there’s a high water table), a sewage treatment plant installation may be the only option – practically and legally.

Regular maintenance really matters to keep your sewage system working as it should. It’s also important to avoid backups, nasty odours, costly repairs and potentially even legal penalties.

Choose sewage system maintenance with John Howe, and we’ll not only empty the sludge – and ensure all sewage is disposed of ethically and sustainably – we’ll check the pump, air pipe, bacteria health, discharged water quality and more. And we’ll repair any damage from items that shouldn’t have found their way inside.

The typical domestic or commercial sewage treatment plant isn’t a simple cesspit. It’s home to living, breathing organisms essential to breaking down the waste material collected there. So when it comes to emptying, cleaning and maintaining your sewage tank, it’s essential to work with someone who understands the delicate chemistry involved.

It’s also important to remember that there are rules surrounding sewage cleaning. Treatment plants must be serviced and maintained by someone who knows what they’re doing and is qualified to do the job.

It depends on the size of tank, but it’s usually once every 12 months.
